Introduction

First meeting of the Philosophy of Time Society of Campinas

Dear all, as most of you probably know already, our seminar in the Philosophy of Time will start on March 6th at 10am in the room #206 of CLE. I created this blog to post relevant announcements and reading materials. On the right bar you find a field which allows you to subscribe to the blog with your email address. Later on we may also use this platform to engage in philosophical discussions related to the seminar.

Here I shall post weekly (or fortnightly... this has yet to be decided), a brief description of the upcoming meeting. I personally always found it more interesting when I read the essential readings in advance, although this is by no means reaquired of you.

Content of the firs meeting

As for our first meeting, I would like you to familiarize with what I take to be the most interesting dispute in the philosophy of time, that between those who think that temporal passage is an illuson (the Staticist) and those who don´t (the Dynamicist). As for the latter view, I would like you to read the first half of McTaggart´s celebrated paper The Unreality of Time. Although his view is ultimatly that time is unreal, the first half of his argument is considered still today as the Master Argument in favour of Dynamicism. As for the former view, Staticism, please read Williams´ classical The Myth of Passage. Find below the links to the papers.

Essential readings:

Have fun! Looking forward to seeing you all there!
